Club opening from 4th July and Andrew Simpson Centre Survey

A few changes have occurred over the last week or so that impact our club.

Firstly the Covid-19 threat has been lowered to level 3 and secondly there is new guidance on social distancing at 1m+ to enable the practical opening of bars and restaurants.

This means that the club can move to the next stage of opening as follows:

  • Tilly's Galley will open from 4th July onwards. There will be some changes to ensure distancing in queues and seating areas. We ask that you comply with all requests for your own and others safety.
  • The club bar will open to members from 4th July onwards, again with changes to ensure compliance to the required regulations
  • The Dutyman rota will become live again from 4th July onwards. We request that you turn up for duty to launch the rescue craft and remain on standby for any rescue required. We still recommend that the orange jafa boats are used where possible to enable 2m social distancing however all boats can be used on a 1m+ basis or if crews are from the same household. As per previous instruction, rescue boats should only be used when a rescue is required to minimise the time that crews are at close proximity to each other (unless from same household). All boats should remain aware of their duty to assist any vessel in trouble and not just assume that the rescue crew have seen the incident – if you are close by check the helm and crew are OK.
  • K2O club will open on 11th July to returning members. Unfortunately, RYA level 1 and 2 courses cannot be offered at this time
  • Informal coaching will recommence on the evening of 8th July. If you are interested and not already included in the WhatsApp group for this please send your details to  and I will forward on to Steve Ward who runs the sessions

The RYA is updating their guidance later this week and the sailing (racing) programme / changing room facility situation will be communicated once we have reviewed this.

In the mean time it has been great to see so many people on the water over the last month. I have received many comments about the more laid-back approach and how it has improved the club community. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays all seem to be taking care of themselves but a few have commented that a morning race and an afternoon race on Saturday with a longer lunch break would suit their needs better than the current 3 race schedule so folk can chat over lunch and allow some time for cruising and practicing. The current plan is to return to racing with the 3 race programme on Saturday but if there is a large expression of wish to drop to a morning and an afternoon race only then I would be happy to consider the change – drop me your thoughts on  (I will assume no communication = keep as is).

Look forward to seeing you on the water soon.

The Andrew Simpson Centre is currently reviewing its readiness to open - here is a note from them too:

Hello

I hope you are all enjoying being back out on the water again.

As COVID-19 lockdown restrictions begin to lift, we continue to monitor Government Guidelines alongside RYA Guidance to inform our operations over the coming months.

We will only consider opening Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham when we are confident that we can facilitate safe activity, with appropriate social distancing measures, hygiene procedures and risk management practices. Our priority is to reassure you as our customer that your safety is our priority and therefore, as part of this process, we also want to hear from you.

If you would be interested in any of our courses or activities please could complete a 2 minute survey which will help us to understand your readiness to leave your home to exercise and spend time outdoors, on the water and in what capacity.

Thank you for your time.

Stay safe and keep well.

Kind regards,

Andrew Simpson Centre Team Birmingham

Notice from the Committee

 Dear Bartley SC Member,

We hope you staying safe and in good health at the current time and those of you participating at Bartley are enjoying your water sports.

The Committee held their monthly meeting last night and discussed the Annual General Meeting. Under current government guidelines we cannot promote gatherings of more than 6 people and we need 26 to be quorate so a face to face meeting is not yet possible. Our constitution doesn't allow for remote on-line AGMs and as yet the government rules prohibit this too so we are in a holding pattern as to the date at the moment. We will schedule the AGM as soon as we can and as such are kicking off the process for election of flag officers and committee of management.

Three of our five directors will step down at the AGM after numerous years of service, we thank them for their significant contribution to bringing the club to its current level of success and now need replacements in order to both function day to day and to continue to grow.

If you feel you have the skills, the vision, the desire to put something back into the club, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team then we would love to hear from you by providing an expression of interest to by 30th June 2020.

In terms of commitment the committee meet monthly to review finances, administration, maintenance, marketing, on-the-water activities and plans for the future. Workload is distributed and progressed between meetings.

There will be a full handover and support for those who are prepared to take on a committee position.

The process is as follows:

Expressions of interest to be submitted to by 30th June 2020

Nominations for Flag Officers and Committee of Management 4 weeks prior to the AGM

Election of Flag Officers and Committee of Management at the AGM (voted for by current members present)

This is a great opportunity to gain experience running a small business, taking a role of both influence and responsibility, and putting back into the shared interest community that you enjoy.

We very much look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

Simon Hardiman

Rear Commodore

GJW ITCA GBR Tidal e-sailing Championships

With the absence of the International Topper Class national series events they have been running e-sailing series events instead. The latest of these was the Tidal championships that consisted of 5 races on Saturday evening to determine the top 60 competitors split into groups of 20 for the Gold, Silver, and Bronze fleet flights for the finals on Sunday night.

Millie participated for ITCA and Bartley and as soon as she entered the first race it was apparent that this was going to be tough with the UK e-sailing champion and runner up in her race! She took it in her stride though and managed a couple of high placings (3rd and a 4th) that saw her through to 32nd place out of 114 competitors and qualification in the Silver fleet for Sunday.

Sunday's racing was tough but again Millie punched above her weight (which is actually quite light) to come 11th in the Sliver fleet and 31st overall. She was quite pleased to beat her RYA coach by 2 places too :) which could make the next squad meeting quite interesting!

At Bartley we have enjoyed the e-sailing whilst the real thing hasn't been available but now we are back on the water the participation has dropped to a couple of members so it feels like time to draw a close to our club scheduled VR Inshore races and let those who wish to continue playing join the available public races and championships. Thanks to all who have supported this, it has built new friendships, kept us connected as a club, and taught us a lot about tactics.

Lively Saturday

It was a great day of sailing today. The fleets were exercising hard, the juniors were literally screaming across the pond, and Nigel and Freya found the bailer in the Merlin!

Thanks to Collin and Sean for providing rescue cover today with some help from Cecily and Kerry who took a few pictures whilst on the water.

Despite the lack of wind the club had good turnout last night from both Sailors and SUP - pleasant and relaxing....

(and one capsize to windward - now who could that have been?)

For more photos and updates go to the Bartley SC Facebook page where Jennifer Foort is doing a great job posting all things club related - thanks Jennifer!
