Solos in the Sunshine
The 7th October brought sunshine and, after a brief postponement, a perfect force 3 from the South West for the 2018 Sailing Chandlery Midland Series Solo open.
The wind direction meant a windward - leeward course was the order of the day with long beats followed by long runs making the racing tactical and tight. In the first 2 races the fleet was split by under 3 minutes first to last boat at the finish line.
Two races were run back to back in the morning with Alan Bishop (Girton) taking the 1st race followed by Ian Ingram (Earlswood Lakes) and Howard Eeles (Bartley), with Nigel Davies (Draycote) getting ahead in the second followed by Ian Ingram and Alan Bishop.
A welcome lunch of chicken curry from Dee and the galley crew was taken before the two afternoon races.
The afternoon saw a course change to add a couple of reaching legs into the mix but this didn't phase the front runners with Alan Bishop taking another 1st, Nigel Davies in second, and Bob Suggitt of Barnt Green SC claiming third.
Ian Capener (Bartley) finally found his form to take the final race of the day from Chris Brown (Draycote) in second and Ian Ingram in third.
The final results showed just how tight the racing had been with 2nd and 3rd place tied, and 4th and 5th place tied bringing the low points scoring system into play to differentiate the final placings:
1st Alan Bishop (Girton)
2nd Nigel Davies (Draycote)
3rd Ian Ingram (Earlswood Lakes)
4th Ian Capener (Bartley)
5th Bob Suggitt (Barnt Green)
Oldest boat prize Huw Davies (Bartley)
Thanks to David and Ed Badger for all their efforts to organise the day, the photos, the new committee boat flag mast holder (fantastic), and the prizes.
