Everyone is welcome especially families who need to blow away the mistletoe and those extra pudding portions!!!

Bartley Lasers boys triumphant at Frampton Wessex Laser finals

On arriving at a very blustery day with forecasts of 30-40 mph winds it was conditions that Jeremy Higson Robin Pitt and John Ling has all experienced at Bartley so were not foiled at the chance of venturing out.

After a tricky on beach wind launch the 30 strong fleet made it to the line and were amazed to see a very professional timing board counting down the 5 minutes. Something we need to consider!!!

The race was two great beats and two blasting reaches which saw Phenomenal speeds and spray. Surprisingly no broken masts were seen possibly because virtually everyone capsized in the guests.

In the first race Robin and John got a good start and john made his way to the front but was forced to do a 720 which lost him the lead. Whilst Jeremy and Robin fort hard, some of the shifty experts seem to come through. Then Robin got in irons and was forced to retire but used this time wisely to regroup his race plan thoughts. Jeremy had some great beats to recover to 6place whilst John managed to catch the leaders and win race 1.

So with Robin’s nemesis Adam John came in 9^th he decided that he would turn up for race two!! And so he did with a 11^th 6^th and 5^th in the next races. Just showing that he has the plan to get his act together for the winter series. Jeremy was again close at the start and was right up with the leaders but unfortunately a local sailor that acted in the strangest of fashions, by thinking it was clever to hit as many boats as possible and in the end this took him out big time so unfortunately retired in the last race right when he had he leaders in sight.

At the prize giving it was BARTLEY rules the waves!!! John winning overall Ed Higson wining the Wessex series of events and Robin finishing his series in 8^th and Jeremy in 10^th. So 4 of the top places going to Bartley Lasers. What a great season they guys have had.

Combining this with Simon Hardiman completing the Masters and doing really well and Richard (baker boy) getting his new boat up to speed the winter season looks like its going to be a great battle before the new year.

Review of racing format

The Sailing committee of Bartley Sailing club are currently reviewing options to freshen up the racing at Bartley. 

This has been brought on by issues such as long delays between the faster boats finishing handicaps, then starting pursuits, particularly when the race has been prematurely finished due to slower boats potential elapsed time on the race course.

Shortley you will recieve a Survey MONKEY request, inviting you to participate and share your views with us.

Please could you think carefully about the questions which will be those below and feel free to add comments at the bottom of the Survey MONKEY, we can only implement the wishes of the membership with Knowledge of what they want through feedback from surveys such as this.

K2o has nearly finished for this season; the last session is 17th October.

I would like say that it has been another tremendous season for K2o.

However it is with sadness that I tell you that for Richard and Lucy Crute-Morris and John Ridley it will be finishing with this Saturday being their last sessions.

All three have decided not to continue to help with K2o after this season, but they will remain part of the club and continue to support K2o..

All three were founder members and have worked tirelessly for K2o both on and off the water, Richard and John encouraging many of the youngsters to get into sailing and Lucy has always been there to treat the bruises and mop up the tears and most importantly of all, she has done a wonderful job with all the administration. K2o runs very smoothly and is very well organised and that comes down to hard work and decication.

Also Anna Mason left in the summer taking up her new role in Bristol. Again Anna has been a dedicated member of the team.

It’s not all sadness as K2o continues with the addition of new instructors who have joined this year. Ed and Brad joined earlier in the season and recently we welcomed Kate to the Club and straight away she has got involved with K2o.

On behalf of the Committee and Club members I’d like to thank all those involved with K2o and also to thank all the children for how well they behave at the club. It’s great to see them out on the water enjoying themselves. Long may it continue.

Duty Attendance

Please remember to sign the attendance sheet on the bar when you turn up for duty. Not only do you get your free cup of tea, but Dutyman then knows who has done their duty and does not re-roster you again.

Boat spaces

At this time of year we see the return of quite a few boats. Please can you let Alan Archer know if you are putting your boat in a space, particularly if it is not your space or if it is a new boat? It is difficult to keep track of who’s boat is who’s. This doesn’t just apply to Lasers ! I think Alan is trying to track down who the Scorpion is…..I think it may be a new member.

If you any problems or aren’t sure about boat spaces then please get in touch with Alan or please feel free to let me know.

Supernova Open

Just a reminder that this Sunday is the Supernova Open. It is a great opportunity to see the Club’s premier fleet in action. There should be a good turnout.

It is only a rumour that the lunch has a Mexican theme !!

Andy Bownes sailing his Phantom and John Ling in his Laser travelled to Shustoke on Sunday 27 September to represent Bartley SC..

In the Phantom fleet Andy returned to his old club to show them a few trick and made some really good starts but unfortunately each time he managed to get away the wind did a vicious turn leaving him on the wrong side of the lake. After some slight verbal pressure from close by sailors Andy did manage to maintain top 2/3 positions and was 3^rd Overall. Next Sunday 4^th Oct sees Bartley hosting the Phantom open and as part of the circuit turn out could be good. We understand some top sailors are planning to join in and its rumoured that son Chris Bownes is racing his Dad!!!

John in the strong 30 Laser fleet was desperate for victory as in the overall Midlands 2015 Grand Prix it’s so close at the top with three sailors with 3 wins!!. The first race saw John coming from behind to eventually lead but on the last lead to the line he didn’t cover the pack and had to settle for 2^nd. Pressure mounted as Cameron who had won was now poised and needed the top place to secure the trophy. But this was not to be, as John managed to battle hard in the second and Won the last race to take this year’s honours.

The Laser Grand Prix finals are next week and he needs a 3^rd or better to take overall title!!!

Bartley Sailing Club hosted its own Bartley's Bash last Sunday 20th September, where over 44 people were on the water including visitors and K20 youth sailors to enjoy a wonder day of weather and

Ann Kelly our OD and her team, had set us a great course and the longest start line ever seen at BSC to allow all the fleet to get safely away. For the first race Paul & Ella Cowin's in their Vago were quite quick off the mark but showing us the stern (back) of his new RS 400 was Howard, closely followed by Debbie Degge in her Aero 7 and chasing hard was John in his Laser, with the rest of the pack chasing.

For the second year running our visitors Phil and Tracey in the Enterprise did very well especially as they did not know where the buoys were!

It was great to see so many youngsters out on the water and yes we are talking about you Alan & Ken!!!!... Seriously Megan Hardiman displayed great racing skills in her RS Tera and was close to Tom Williams in his Laser!.on corrected time. But in the Youth category   Crewing for good old Dad in their RS Feva was Millie Hardiman who won the overall trophy which was nearly as big as her!! Second was Will and Alex Jones who unfortunately had to dash so didn’t collect their wonderful wooden shield prize.

In the Solo’s the Thornton family had a tough battle and it was a battle to the end with Nick the old man!! Using his regular knowledge to just come in ahead of his son Neil, who clearly was disappointed to not win the amazing personalised Solo logo trophy.

In the RS fleet (out-side top position) was Andy Gill and Ciara Perry in their 200 who came from behind to finish just 1.5minutes behind the leader in corrected time so also had a good race and will again get the sailing committee to re look at their handicap!!!

Andy Bownes who used this as a test event in readiness for the Phantom open on the 4^th Oct, had a strong start but was chased hard but in the end didn’t get enough clear air to get away soon enough. As did Pete Ansty who came in second Phantom found that more wind was needed. Our local commander in chief Mike Gibson in his new Supernova, got berried at the start and was held back in traffic so was slightly off pace for him!

John Ellis Rose had a close battle with Tom and finish third Laser and said at the prize giving it was a good day and an added benefit was he stayed dry!

We had a lot of variation this year in the fleets with Adrian and Maria Blocking in their Fireball who nearly got fully out on the wire! Colin & Sally in the Merlin who were second home on the water. Kev Payne sailed consistent must have been all this recent practice at the BSC RS 300 open!!. Again this year we had a windsurfer with Clare Simpson who made it round and this was definitely a massive triumph for her which you could see from the big smile on her face.

A special mention for Huw and Claire who sailed their laser's for the very first time in a race - well done.

Overall Debbie Degge was awarded the prestige Silver BB trophy for the year with Second was John, and third Andy & Ciara

One of the key drivers for the day was to raise funds for our Bartley Sailing Club K20 youth sailors which we have received so far £168 on the day with some sailors pledging to still put some in the pot!!! You know who you are!!! (I have your names!!)

The second half of the day was a race with a twist and fun games session, as Ann introduced the adults to her "Pirates". This mischievous bunch hit the adults with their coloured cannon (plastic) balls resulting in the adults having to do a penalty turn. But in the end their can only be one!!! As it was Kevin Payne who managed to survive the best and was crowned the winner.

There was plenty of activity from the pirates Megan and Millie ruling the waves, Maisy riding on the bow to gain added accuracy, Tom, unsure whether to attack his fellow Laser sailors or not and Cecily in the boat with a sting in its tail!

It was brilliant to see so many people down again and we feel we achieve the aim of raising awareness and some cash to help people get out sailing and racing !!!

So remember the Bar or the committee are still taking any donations so if you can spread the word we will be most grateful.

I have invited Neill Chipping from Splash Adventure Training, that many of you know, back to run another winter series for us. This year we will be running both Day Skipper & Yachtmaster as well as VHF DSC SRC courses.  These courses will prepare you for getting On Board & taking responsibility for the Helm of a yacht either in local waters or offshore dependent on experience, here in the UK or in more sunny locations around the world

The first course we are looking to put on is the RYA Day Skipper & Coastal Yachtmaster theory dependent on interest.

• Running over 16 weeks from 7pm to 9.30pm
• The start date being proposed is the 7^th October TO 24^TH February

We are asking, please, for donations or a min £5 per boat and for anyone to raise funds towards our youth K20 programme and other sailing club activities. Last year we raised into the central Bart's account in excess of £600. So this year the committee wanted to maintain this generosity but keep the sums raised and use locally at our club for to benefit our members.   

The day’s events are open to any family and friends club members - therefore we are hoping that local clubs will support our day as well.

All Children must be accompanied by Parent(s) or Guardian.

We have finally got the sailwave file working correctly now, thanks to Mark Reddington for all his help and persistence to get it sorted.

So now the fleet have reached that point in the year where you can start to see where you are on the two ladders PY is the SCRATCH and RYA NHC is the personal results list.

To be clear we are running a 21 series of Tue night races that should finishes on the Tue 1^st Sept (I believe) so prize giving and our Curry night bottle race meal will be the 8^th Sept (following week)

So take a good look at the list upto Race 14 so ensure that do enough to qualify which is Half the amount of races sailed. Attached is a pdf which shows each race and how the handicaps change etc. Each week on line on our results page is the best place to see the most updated results though.

So far this has been a great series with reasonable numbers turning out to enjoy the spring and warm summer evenings, which has produced some of the BEST sailing and Racing at Bartley SC.

The battle is tight for the personal series with Robin Pitt, coming to his form and being pushed hard by Richard Baker in his brand new boat….these two are closely followed by last year’s winner Mike Acaster, Jeremey Higson, Michael Parker and me.

Alistair Baillie has been showing us his strong downwind skills, and would be higher on the leader board but seems to like the water as he goes for an occasional dip which slows him down. Simon Hardiman has been in the top 3 each time he’s come out but needs to attend more!!! As does our Champion Ed Higson!!!!what can we say 4 firsts and 3 seconds in the scratch, he a hard one to catch these days!!!

The fleet has been blessed by the ladies this year and Kate Victoria, Anna Mason, Debbie Degge and Emma have all done very well each time they sailed…In fact Both Kate and Emma have each won a personal race!!

We have had some new members join us Martin Slyne, Tom Fenemore, Duncan Samuel, David Matty, which is great to see. Along with Gary Allcock, Giles Rawlinson, John Ellis Rose and Brad Eeles which would be great if we saw them all more on the water.

With 7 races left in the series it’s going to be intense so don’t miss out…. Come on down

Congratulations to Bartley's Crispin Beumont for winning Silver at the 29er European Championship at Medemblik.

Crispin and his crew Tom Darling missed out on Gold by one point on the final day.

Crispin now goes to the worlds at Pwllheli 4th to the 8th August i am sure we will all wish him luck and keep a keen eye on the results

It occurs to me, that all race reports are written by the winners, or at the very worst someone not far behind. Whilst there’s nothing inherently wrong with this (after all, history is always written by the winning side), it doesn’t always tell the full story.

So with this in mind, here’s our story from the recent RS Southern championships.

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Tony Cliff & I sail with my best friend Shawn Woodcock an RS400 at Bartley SC. We’re usually somewhere towards the back of the fleet – although not always, we do every now and again, get the occasional nose bleed !

Our planning for the Southern Champs started some time ago, probably around the time of the RS Sprint Champs at Rutland, when, buoyed by our promotion to the gold fleet (if only for one brief moment – we still have the picture to prove it) & the large turnout of Bartley 400’s – some 7 boats made the trip to Rutland, we all decided that it be great to try to repeat the experience at another event.

Ever since we started planning, tales of the killer chain ferry, along with links to youtube videos of said ferry destroying a dinghy have done the rounds, much to the amusement of some, but I have to say, real worry for me !

So, at 6am on Saturday 20^th June, Shawn arrived to pick me up. We travelled down to the south coast through the drizzle, eventually emerging in Poole harbour to a gloriously sunny day. Some 100 boats of the various RS classes joined us – quite some spectacle.

After the briefing, which included instructions on getting past the chain ferry – don’t hit it, as it’s an offence, we started off with some trepidation. I should probably explain, as puddle sailors from Birmingham, our experience of sailing together on the sea is limited to a flat calm weekend at Pwllheli. lord knows how many years ago.

The sail out to Bournemouth bay was pretty uneventful really – 100 dinghys managed to negotiate the chain ferry with no real drama. In fact, once we cleared Poole harbour, it was a pretty good reach down to the start line. Our three races on the Saturday were pretty good too, enough breeze to get the boat planning / catch a few waves, but not too much to cause many problems. We also had our own little tussles with a few of the other back markers. In the first race, we were in about 23^rd position for much of the race, until the last leg to the finish line – we didn’t know where it was & the chasing pack did ! Hence our position of 27 out of 27…

Things improved in the 2^nd race, we had some exciting battles and ultimately managed to hold on to 20^th (with the other 7 boats breathing down our necks at the finish line). In the final race of the day, tiredness along with a broken wing wang meant that we retired, only to face a trudge back to the club against the tide. We clocked it at 1 ½ hours from the sailing area.

The real entertainment, as always, is reserved for Saturday night, to give you a flavour we had, an RAC callout due to an over active fridge…, BBQ’s till midnight, midges galore, an inflatable sofa and spiced rum & coke. Of course none of this would be any good unless you had a great bunch of friends to share it with!

Sunday morning dawned with one or two sore heads & more breeze than Saturday. Feeling once again nervous about the days sailing we started off in circa 15-20 knots with waves for the chain ferry… Once again no issues.  So for us, we come screaming out of the harbour going about as fast as we can ever remember going only for a mighty bang, followed by Shawn calmly (!) telling me he had no steering, we realised quickly that whatever we’d hit (below the surface) had broken the down haul on the rudder. We promptly capsized, to re-emerge facing Poole harbour… the remnants of the oncoming RS fleet (100’s, 200s, 300’s, 400’s, 500’s, 800’s) all flying there kites approaching at speed…along with various other craft coming in and out of the harbour !

Unfortunately, our weekend was over – we crawled back to the club to pack away. Nevertheless, we had a great time once again. I have learnt a few lessons, and if you’ll indulge me a little while longer, these are they :

1. Make sure your boat is prepared – over the course of the weekend breakages cost us 4 races. Whether we’d have been able to do all 4 is questionable though!
2. There will always be someone to race against, whatever your ability – don’t deprive yourself of the chance to have a go
3. Don’t listen to scary stories about chain ferries and the like – it wasn’t that bad in the end. Four successful crossings and not a near miss in sight (it really wasn’t a killer chain ferry !)
4. Even if you’re a puddle sailor with limited experience (like me), at least once in your life, have a go on the sea. It’s hard work, but with all that expanse of water, the wind & the waves, even if you’re in last place I guarantee you’ll enjoy the reaches
5. Value your friends – we had a great bunch with us at the Sprints in Rutland & again at the Southern Champs – this what really makes the weekend.

This weekend saw a bumper turnout of Bartley boats at both the Supernova Nationals at Paignton and the RS Southern Championships at Parkstone.

Well done to Mike Gibson coming 2nd overall in the Supernova Nationals, with Bartley also being well represented by Chris Hawley, Gary Butterfield & Steve Hawley (all finishing in the top 20).

In the 400's - Howard/Wayne finished 11th, Caroline/Jason 13th, Nick/Tony 18th & Shawn/Tony 27th.  Shawn & Tony proving that a bit of boat bimbling goes a long way broken wing wangs on Saturday & rudder down hawl on Sunday, although we're pretty sure the latter was the fault of a rather large jelly fish.....

We are at a stage that we need to compile a list of actions and strategy to improve both the racing and general sailing activities including racing etc.

Like you I am keen to ensure BSC grows and therefore that the Bartley Sailing Club sailing committee listens and ACTS on ideas.

This Wed 3rd 7pm is the planned S.Com monthly meeting where I’m hoping it’s well-attended and at which you and any club member wishing to contribute is welcome.

Please can you therefore confirm if you can attend….

The main committee have asked me to build on the previous successes that Guy and Mike achieved in the chair, so I thought that it would be a good opportunity for us all to:-

• Take stock of BSC positives
• Review the opportunities
• Develop a defined list of actions that need

There has been a number of emails flying around, concerning a number of points that we as the Sailing Club sailing committee should consider as:-

1. Training – what is available to members - when best to do it, who can deliver and offer support
2. Racing formats – times between races type of races
3. Getting members back on the water
4. Open meeting formats and combined fleets
5. Bart’s Bash event

Please can you consider the above and let me have your thoughts
