Another Champion (Derek Campbell )joined our Laser fleet tonight

Well I am so please to report that we had another Champion (Derek Campbell )who joined our Laser fleet tonight..... and just showed us the way round and on corrected time in tough fluky conditions he manage to WIN.... well done Derek Campbell.

Also Ed Higson made it back after his amassing racing recently an becoming National Schools Champion 2014.... we are all so proud of him.... it gets harder and harder to beat him....

On Saturday we travelled up to Datchet Water for the 2014 National Schools Inland Sailing Championship. The forecast was for light winds on the Saturday followed by a heavier breeze on the Sunday. I was sailing in the biggest fleet there and there would be some tough competition.

In the final race of the day race I started at the pin end and managed to port tack the fleet and had a commanding lead. Unfortunately again the same guy who had won the first two race came flying in from the right hand side and I was trying to play it safe and not take any risks, he went onto win the race and I finished again in second.

Overnight the leader was winning by five points over myself and the only way I could win the event was to win the next three race to end up on equal points, if he beat me in any of them he would take the title.

The wind was a lot stronger on the Sunday and I was confident I would succeed, I knew I had to keep an eye on the guy who would sail to the corners and hope for the best and also the bigger lads who were still in contention. In the first race I had a solid start and worked the boat up the first beat, again the leader managed to pass me as we went round the first mark but I was certain in these conditions I could take him later in the race. I kept close to him round the course until I took my opportunity to sail over the top of him on the reach to gain room at the mark. I stayed strong and went onto win the race by a substantial distance. 1 down two to go.

The leader was still not worried as he had two more opportunities to beat me but I was still one step closer to him. I had another great start in the second race of the day and led from start to finish to gain another bullet, the wind had increased to around 25 knots and I didn't have much trouble pulling away from the fleet.

We went in for lunch and as the wind looked it didn’t look like we would go back out which was terrible news! I needed just one more win to secure the title. Luckily the wind did subside enough for the fleet to return to racing and the final race got underway. I had a decent start and was going along nicely. I lost sight of the series leader and he came out of nowhere to pass me at the windward mark. He continued to lead and I didn’t get the same chance to pass hime like in the first race. We both knew the winner would take all and we both worked so hard up the beat not giving each other an inch. I just managed to scrape in front, we sailed four beats and my legs were burning after hiking so hard up the beats. I went onto secure the final win.

The event was very tough and I didn't make it easy for myself after the first day, the other lad sailed well but I think just cracked under the pressure a bit and let it slip. I’m off to Weymouth for the Europa Cup on Thursday which will be a huge challenge and I will be up against Olympians! Lets win!
